West Orange Mountaineers Fall to Montclair, 40-13

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The November 2 football game under the lights at Suriano Stadium against Montclair was not exactly what Mountaineer fans were hoping for. The Mounties beat the Mountaineers 40-13, in their rivalry game.
The Mountaineers kicked the ball off to start the game. But within 20 seconds, Montclair had a 50-yard run down the field. After a missed field goal attempt, the Mountaineers got possesion of the ball but they failed to sustain a drive. With 3:45 remaining in the first quarter, the Mounties ran the ball in to score and convert the extra point. The first quarter ended with Montclair up 7-0 with a touchdown by Elijah Robinson.
The Mounties were in possession of the ball at the start of the second quarter. They failed to score and settled for a field goal by Will Kline, which was good, making the game 10-0. The Mountaineers fumbled the ball, and with 4:26 left in the half, Montclair's Elijah Robinson scored his second touchdown, but the extra point is not converted. The first half ended with Montclair up 16-0.
Montclair kicked the ball off to West Orange to begin the second half. West Orange missed a first down on that series, punting the ball from inside their 20, and the return was brought 50 yards back all the way to the West Orange 6-yard-line. Quarterback Elijah Robinson then ran the 6 yards the next play into the end zone, passing to Donovan MacDonald to make it 22-0 for the Mounties, with West Orange stopping a fake extra point conversion.
After West Orange failed to get a first down on their next possession they punted away. Montclair's Robinson threw a long pass that was intercepted by West Orange’s number 22 Jasaan Eley deep in West Orange’s own territory. To counteract that interception, West Orange quarterback, Jahir Blanton, threw an interception to Montclair’s number 7, Ibn Wallace, the next play. This set up the Mounties with good field position at West Orange’s 33-yard-line.
Montclair would convert on their advantageous field position a few plays later on a pass to Donovan McDonald to bring the score to 30-0 with the extra point.
With only two minutes remaining in the third quarter, West Orange's McDerby Ceneus ran the ball for a touchdown to bring the score to 30-7.
Montclair punted the ball after a failed possession. Mountaineer Isaiah Scott was back to receive, and called for a fair catch but missed the ball. As the ball rolled back he attempted to retrieve it, but lost control of it. The Mountie defense jumped on the opportunity for a good offensive position and pounced on the ball at the West Orange 30.
With 9:25 left in fourth quarter, Montclair's Will Kline kicked a field goal from the 30 yard line to further extend the Mounties lead to 33-7.
A West Orange comeback attempt resulted in an 80-yard touchdown run from Jahir Blanton. With the missed extra point, the score stood at 33-13.
With one minute left in the game Montclair's Gerard Brown scored on a short run, making the final score 40-13.
Montclair is now 5-0 in the Super Essex Conference-American Division with two games remaining. West Orange is second at 5-1. As a result of the win over West Orange, Montclair is now the top seed in North Jersey, Section 1, Group 5 competition. West Orange is third in the section.
