WEST ORANGE, NJ- The situation for West Orange residents without power is improving. With the ongoing efforts of PSEG and crews from around the country, power has been restored to about 70% of the township. However, lines for gas at open West Orange gas stations were long and clogged roadways all over town. Despite the new gas rationing restrictions ordered by Governor Christie, people were out en masse to get gas with frustration growing.
Mayor Rob Parisi and the township issued the following storm update late this afternoon:
West Orange remains under a limited state of emergency and a mandatory curfew will remain in effect from 6PM to 6AM until further notice. For your safety, we ask that residents remain at home or in secure locations as much as possible over the next several days.
PSE&G has restored power to approximately 70 percent of the Township. We have been on calls with their representatives throughout the day who have assured us that they will be working all night and day until power is restored to the entire Township.
Due to limited power and resources and the hazardous conditions created by the lines of cars and people waiting to get gas, all gas stations in town will shut down at 6PM and will reopen at 6AM until further notice. This is a temporary mandate put into effect for the public’s safety. You can find a list of gas stations that are open in town atwww.westorange.org.
Below is a list of WO gas stations that had gas as of Saturday at 7PM. This does not guarantee they will be open on Sunday. This list will be updated as more stations open.
Citgo -- 13 Northfield Avenue
BP -- 83 Main Street
Delta -- 23 Park Avenue
Exxon – Corner of Pleasant Valley Way & Mt. Pleasant Avenue
Lukoil -- Corner of Pleasant Valley Way & Eagle Rock Avenue
A shelter is open for West Orange residents only at Liberty Middle School, located at 1 Kelly Drive. Bring blankets, prescriptions and any personal needs. Please do not bring pets. Occupants must present proof of residency. The facility will stay open until further notice.
As the cleanup continues, residents can place storm-related debris in front of their homes, but it must be separated from leaves. The Township will not pick up stumps, tree trunks or whole trees.

Mayor Parisi and the Recreation Department are providing a safe Halloween alternative on Monday, November 5th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Liberty Middle School. This late addition to the Recreation Department’s Halloween schedule is provided to the community to ensure that our families have a safe opportunity to celebrate Halloween on the “make up” date as designated by the Governor. West Orange continues to experience energy issues and road closures and the Township is concerned. Going door to door on Monday, in some neighborhoods, may be hazardous. The annual Veteran's Day Ceremony has been canceled due to damage at the memorial on Main Street. Chairperson Gary Englert said in a statement:
"As you may or may not be aware, a tree felled by Tropical Storm Sandy has caused significant damage to the Township's War Memorial Park; toppling the center (American) flag pole, one of the service flag poles (Coast Guard) and both the decorative light posts/fixtures within the complex (see attached picture). Repairs will take some time and will not be inexpensive.
