West Orange Human Relations Commission Announces Martin Luther King Event

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Human Relations Commission has announced plans for their Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2013. The event will be held at St. Joseph's Gymnasium, 44 Benvenue Avenue, West Orange, from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm.
This year's theme will be "Moving Forward With the Dream," a free program that will celebrate the life of Dr. King and feature this year's guest speaker, the Hon. Sharon Robinson-Briggs, Mayor of Plainfield, NJ. In addition to Ms. Robinson-Briggs, several West Orange residents who work in the spirit of peace and justice in the West Orange community, will also be honored. The honorees are West Orange residents whose professional and volunteer accomplishments honor the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther, Jr., in enabling all Americans to reach their potential.
The guest speaker will be The Hon. Sharon Robinson-Briggs, Mayor of Plainfield, NJ. West Orange residents who work in the spirit of peace and justice will be honored. Local musicians will play, and breakfast will be served.
This years honorees will be:
Alice Hoffman, Food Pantry Coordinator at the Holy Trinity-West Orange Food Pantry
Tekeste Ghebremicael, Cass Realtors, and, President of Rotary Club of West Orange
Ken Mandel, Executive Director, West Orange Film Festival
Josie G. Velez, M.S., R.D., DHCFA
Local musicians will be featured and breakfast will be provided. The event is free and open to all.
The West Orange Human Relations Commission was established by municipal ordinance in 1992 and exists to develop and implement programs and initiatives encouraging a positive and constructive dialogue in West Orange regarding diversity and diversity related issues. The commission is involved in community-building tasks and strategies that enhance and sustain respect among different groups and people. Notable efforts of the WOHRC have been Conversations on Race, Diversity Day, the Town Wide Anti Bullying Initiative, and the yearly Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
