West Orange High School Winter Track Team Wraps Up Another Successful Season

WEST ORANGE, NJ—While the weather outside may still not show signs of winter's end, the West Orange High School Winter Track team brought its 2013-2014 to a successful conclustion.
At their last meet, the “Meet of Champions” held in Toms River, the team went all out to do their best. Some highlights included Barden Adams first place win in the high jump with 4.5 and Senior Aliyah Barnes ran the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.11.
In previous matches, WOHS did well, taking victories in the 4x200 race with a time of1:54.74 as well as a win in theGirl’s 800-meter relay, with Ashely Peart, Josie Mitchell, Aliyah Barnes, and Bukola Akinsola.
WOHS also garnered notable wins at the Super Essex Conference Championships at the Jersey City Armory. Caleb Edgehill won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.23, along with Barden Adams, who won first with 6 feet, 2 inches. Siem Mehretu won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:15.85 as well.
Freshman Bukola Akinsola has also made a great impression during her freshman year, winning the 55 dash with a time of 7.42, even beating out Aliyah Barnes, who is currently one of the fastest sprinters in the state.
Junior Ashely Peart says, “I believe the season went quite well and was great preparation for the spring outdoor season.” She’s happy that many of her teammates have accomplished their goals this season, only further motivating them to do better in the upcoming one.
The Boys team won the group 4, New Jersey, Section 1 Championship, while the girls placed third. As a whole, the team is excited and motivated to continue their excellence throughout the spring season and and into the fall. Spring practices begin March 7, and West Orange will certainly be a team to watch.
