WEST ORANGE, NJ - In any high school sport, preparation and readiness are the keys to success. And, with another season in full speed, the award-winning West Orange High School co-ed swimming team continues to work toward a spot in the state championships.

With many coaching turnovers at WOHS, the swim team receives a familiar face, Coach Marc Navata. Coach Navata previously coached at West Orange for five years, and and is back for his second time around and ready to lead the team to victory.

“Swimming is an individual sport; the main way to know you are getting better is through your time,” said Coach Navata. “Our goal is to improve time and get to states."

The team practices in the Golden Dome at Rutgers-Newark. The WOHS swim team is led by upperclassmen and captains Teresa Narduzzi, Kristine Spike, Jawaan Siraj and Logan Fleisher, with several up-and-coming underclassmen.

“Today’s meet went very well," said Captain Kristine Spike. "We fought through the adversity and were able to pull through a win. As far as goals go, we would like to continue winning, which we will obtain by hard work at practice. We aspire to make states and to improve on our individual times."

“We have different sets and workouts every day,” said sophomore Rebekah Pedo, on the practices. "The girl’s team is hoping to win more often. With our current record, 1-3, we are hoping to improve it."

The boys swim team record is currently 0-3-0.

West Orange will compete against Union High School in the Golden Dome at Rutgers, Newark on Monday, January 13, 2014.
