WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange High School took silver in the Scholastic Open Class at the Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships, held April 1-5 in Dayton, Ohio.

The Mountaineers competed in a field of 40 color guards, participating in three rounds to advance to the finals, taking second place with a score of 94.55.

This season, the Winter Guard mastered a five-minute choreographed program, combing dance, flags, sabres, and wooden rifles. Their 2014 production was entitled “I Will Lay Down My Heart”, and included choreography set to Mark Masri’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, a remake of Bonnie Raitt’s 1991 original. All 23 members of the West Orange Winter Guard had individually choreographed roles in the show. Captains of the 2014 West Orange High School Winter Guard include Phelps Toussaint, Jasmeene Borgella and Jessica Kaiser.

The Winter Guard competes in two circuits during the season, the Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network (MAIN) and WGI. The team was promoted this season to "Scholastic Open Class," an upper-level class for accomplished high school sponsored teams. Next year the Winter Guard will be promoted to the “Scholastic World Class” as a medal contender in this year's competition.

This is the eleventh season of competition for the The West Orange High School Winter Guard. The team has advanced to the Finals Round of competition five times in the seven years they have competed at the WGI World Championship. This is their highest level of achievment to date.

The staff of the West Orange High School Winter Guard includes director PJ Tankard, show designer Louis Hellinger, and staff Jackie Milnes, Carol Martin, Denea Gresham, Jen Lube, and Erin McClure, advisor.
