WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Thursday, May 22, the award ceremonies continued at West Orange High School as Advanced Placement students from 2013 and 2014 graduating classes were recognized for their outstanding achievements in advanced placement testing.

West Orange High School offers AP courses in several disciplines beginning in a student's Junior Year. AP courses are the equivalent of college-level courses and students who qualify with scores of 3, 4, or 5 in their year-end AP exams may qualify for college credits. If a student takes two AP courses in Junior year and two in Senior year and gets 3 or higher in all four, they would qualify for the AP awards. Several students in this year's awardees were actually graduates of the West Orange High School Class of 2013, because AP grades are not released until July and graduation is held in June.

To qualify in senior year, a student would have had to take at least three AP courses in Junior year and received scores of 3 or above in all AP exams.

Recognition was given in several areas.

A West Orange High School Outstanding Academic Performance Award was given to students who received a score of 5 on one or more AP exams; AP Scholar awards were given to students who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more exams;  AP Scholars with Honor Awards were given to students who received and averaged scores of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams; and AP Scholars with Distinction Awards were given to students who received and averaged scores of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

National AP Scholar awards were given to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Student names were engraved on plaques of achievement to be located in the lobby of West Orange High School.
