WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Fall Band Concert was held at West Orange High School on Thursday featuring the Ninth-Grade Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble.  For parents and family members, all came away in awe at the incredible talent of the students in the district's award-winning music program.

Parents Denise and Mac Williams reflected on their son's humble beginnings at Redwood Elementary School. Marcus is now a sophomore playing bassoon in the Wind Ensemble.  "We were just talking about Redwood and the band," Denise said. "Now we're sitting here listening to the kids and they are just incredible.  It's like listening to musicians on Broadway."

Several different types of instruments are played by the students, including piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, piano and percussion.

Lisa Swanick, Ninth-Grade Band leader, led her students in three varied selections, the most notable being "Colors of Fall" with intricate tempo changes and lilting melody. Erin McClure, who led both the Concert Band and Symphonic Winds, presented varied programs featuring different instruments. The Concert Band shone on "Apparitions," a haunting piece contrasting consonant and dissonant musicality. Lew Kelly then presented three selections with the Wind Ensemble highlighting folk type selections written for full band.

The Music Department at West Orange High School also presents Choral and Orchestra Concerts. In January, band members will travel to Disney World to learn how to score music for Disney films, and will also make special local appearances at an education convention and compete in several competitions.

The performance was recorded for sale. Contact Lew Kelly at lkelly@woboe.org for information on how to purchase a copy.
