WEST ORANGE, NJ - Each year the West Orange High School baseball team raises money to send the team to Fort Pearce, Fla. for five days during spring training. During that time, the team practices, works out, gets scouted, gets pointers, and more.  It has come to be an integral part of the team's preparation and cohesion.

Senior Mike Zarro, who also played on the West Orange High School state championship boys soccer team, is looking forward to the trip, scheduled in March 2014.  Last year Zarro, a pitcher,  was named to the Essex County Underclassmen All-Star Team.  "Going to Florida allows us to really get the season going in warm weather, and it helps to create unforgettable experiences with our team," Zarro said.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Mountaineer Home Run Club will hold its annual fundraiser at the Shillelagh Club, 648 Prospect Ave., to help offset the cost of the team's trip to Florida.  Doors will open at 7 p.m. with a $10 cover charge and entertainment begins at 8 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m.  Featured musical entertainment will be provided by West Orange's own Phil Johnson; former West Orange resident Scott Cumming, Tony Fernandez, Cory Robinson and Nelson Popp, aka "The Gutter Kings"; and "4Kicks," featuring George Ringel, Rick Forte, Dom Gagliano, and Darryl Clark. All muscians are donating their time.

With a cash bar at the Shillelagh Club's reasonable prices, it's great way for the community, including the parents, to come together and support the sports programs at the high school.

Contact Debi Zarro at 973-669-1704 or email dzarro@woboe.org with questions.
