WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Montclair-Kimberley Academy’s girls' soccer team defeated West Orange High School, 10-4, on Tuesday.

MKA junior forward Olivia Vaughn contributed six first-half goals to the offensive explosion.

“Our midfielders were making really good passes through the openings,” Vaughn said. “And having that kind of support from the midfield really allowed me to move forward.”

MKA (1-0) took a quick 2-0 lead early in the game, but West Orange (1-1) responded with a goal from senior Dana Catanzarite. That was the closest West Orange would come in the contest, as the Cougars followed with five unanswered goals.

"Fortunately for us they gave us plenty of space behind and we had a lot of plays going forward,” MKA head coach Kieran Patrick said. “And gladly we were able to take advantage in the first half."

Despite the rough first half for West Orange, which saw MKA score five unanswered goals to end the period, the Mountaineers were able to regroup and compete in the second half of play.  The final half proved to be more evenly matched as both teams saw equal opportunities.

“Possession is the type of soccer we like to play,” West Orange head coach Lou Mignone said. “We like to keep the ball on the ground and keep it moving and I think we did that well today.”

MKA’s sophomore midfielder Samantha Pai added two goals of her own in the second half while junior forward Sarah Pryor notched two goals, including the final goal for the Cougars.

Catanzarite was the highlight for West Orange scoring two late goals to complete the hat trick, accounting for all but one of the Mountaineer’s goals.  Freshman striker Annabella Schuler had the other goal for West Orange.
