WEST ORANGE, NJ -  The West Orange High School varsity girls’ soccer team played their fifth game with a 3-2 loss against West Essex on September 19.

West Orange’s plan was to get possession of the ball early on in the game, and then play through the midfield, shooting as many penetrating balls through the score zone as possible.

In the start of the game, West Orange played an aggressive defensive game when West Essex had the ball. But West Orange stole possession from West Essex and senior Dana Catanzarite scored a goal only 6 minutes into the game.

WOGS continued to play a good offensive and defensive game, with junior Maya Younker keeping steady hold of midfield alongside Racquel Chong. Dana Catanzarite and Annabella Schuler played aggressive forwards throughout the entire game, earning WOHS their two goals. Kristina Jaeger and Alison Lawlor played great defensive backs throughout the entirety of the game as well.

After halftime, West Essex came back and scored another goal, courtesy of Erica Perrotta. Jordyn Maskowitz earned another goal with only 14 minutes left on the clock.

West Orange chose a tactic of shooting more long passes, and with only seconds left in the game, Dana Catanzarite came back and shot a goal straight through to the goal, ending the game with 3-2 West Orange.

“We had a lot of good moments, and several bad ones, but we’re still looking for consistency,” said the West Essex head coach.

“We (West Orange) played well and intelligently through the midfielders and strikers… but we still need to work on and take care of our first touch,” Coach Lou Mignone stated.

The game had eight shots to the goal from West Orange, and 15 from West Essex.West Orange varsity goalie, sophomore Heidi Paulson, made eight saves.

The girls varsity team will face off against Glen Ridge on Saturday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m.
