WEST ORANGE, NJ—West Orange’s Varsity Girls soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss against Montclair on October 21.

West Orange started off the game with a strong tactic of “ball hunting,” where the girls put pressure on the ball at all times to deny the other team any penetrating passes.

Montclair played a good offensive first half, scoring three goals in total. However, a lot of their goal shots were saved by West Orange sophomore goalie Heidi Paulson.

Montclair’s striker Britney Cooper, number 25, scored two of their goals in the first half, and one by number 6, Lindsey Ewertson, in the last seconds of the half.

With only four minutes left in the game, a foul and an angry referee led to a yellow card being issued against WOHS senior Fethnat NiShuileabhain. However, she recovered from the call and came back in the second half to play a great offensive game.

During halftime, WOHS Coach Lou Mignone encouraged the girls to continue putting pressure on the ball, saying that they “started off good, but got lazy as time went on.”

Montclair coach, Rob McOmish, commented that “we’re playing well, and we are proud of our current record (14-1), and it’s good to be able to play all our players. West Orange is playing hard though, and that’s what matters.”

The second half consisted of constant pressure being put on the ball by Montclair, but many saves by WOHS goalie Francesca Romano. On West Orange’s side, Chinaza Anuamadi, Kristina Jaeger, Fethnat NiShuileabhain, Kelly Alvarado, and Janelle Gerald all kept pressure on the ball throughout the second half. West Orange also had one close shot by Dana Catanzarite, but the ball was caught by the Montclair goalie.

With ten minutes on the clock, Montclair number 3, Jillian Jennings scored a goal. For the last ten minutes of the game, West Orange saved more goals and kept putting pressure on the ball, keeping Montclair from scoring.

West Orange coach Lou Mignone said, “We did better in the second half playing off the striker, creating several opportunities to score…but Montclair is a tough team, being number five in New Jersey, and I think we played fairly well against a top notch team.”

The West Orange Girls Soccer team plays Mt. St. Dominic on October 28.
