WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Fire Department promoted five in a ceremony held on June 30. Promoted to Captain were Philip Bussey, Abdur Yasin, Donald Peters, Scott Rechner, and Kip Dangler.
After an invocation by Father James Chern, Fire Department Chaplain, Fire Chief Pete Smeraldo introduced the newly-promoted captains:
Captain Philip Bussey - Philip Bussey began his career in 1994 as a volunteer in the Boro of Kinnelon. He then became an EMT in 1995. He graduated from New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2001 with a bachelor of science in Information Systems. He worked for Saint Barnabas Health Care system and Monmouth Ocean Hospital Corporation before he was hired in September of 2005 as a firefighter in the township of West Orange. His professional certifications include Firefighter I, Firefighter II, n and Confine Space Operations, High Angle Operations, Fire Instructor Level I, Drill Ground Instructor, and Incident Command System I-300. Phil teaches in the fire program at the Essex County Police Academy. Phil is married to his wife Lauren and they have 4 children, Anthony 15, Kyle 13, Aiden 3, and Hailey 1.
Captain Abdur Yasin - Abdur Razzaaq Yasin has been a resident of West Orange for most of his life. In 2003, he earned his B.A. from Rutgers-Newark, graduating with honors while majoring in History., Abdur joined the West Orange Fire Department in 2002, just prior to graduation. Abdur is a certified EMT and Fire Inspector and has been recognized numerous times for his efforts and job performance during fires and other hazardous incidents, medical emergencies and for his work as a union representative. In February 2013, Abdur was appointed to the position of Deputy OEM Coordinator to serve as Program Manager for the Township’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a program administered by the West Orange Office of Emergency Management. Abdur began pursuit a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from Rutgers-Newark’s School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA). After his first year in graduate school, he was awarded the Henry J. Raimondo Legislative Fellowship from Rutgers’ Eagleton Institute of Politics. In May 2014, Abdur graduated from SPAA and was selected for induction into the Pi Alpha Alpha National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration. Currently, Abdur resides in West Orange, New Jersey with his wife, Begonia and two children, Maria Christine and Christian.
Captain Donald Peters - Donald Peters joined the West Orange Fire Department in July of 1995 and became an EMT in 1996. He holds certifications for Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Confined Space,Trench Rescue, Rope Rescue, ICS 700and Hazmat Operations. Born and raised in Nutley, New Jersey. Don graduated Nutley High Schoolin 1991 where he met and then later married his wife of 19 years, Carrie Peters. Together they have two children, Carly 16 and Madison 12.
CaptainScott Rechner - Scott was appointed to the West Orange Fire Department in January of
1994. Scott is certified in Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Operations and Awareness, Trench Rescue, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Fire Officer I, National Incident Management level 700 among many other certifications from the State of New Jersey Division of Fire Safety. He is also trained in CPR and is an Emergency Medical Technician. Scott has received many life saving accommodations during his career. He was recognized and awarded Firefighter of the year by the West Orange Chamber of Commerce. Scott was also awarded the Medal of Merit in 2004 by the department and received Congressional Recognition from Congressman William Pascrell. Scott is an active member of the Local 28 firefighters union and has served as its Safety Officer for 8 years. Scott and his wife Sara have been married for 18 years they have three children. Julia 17, Lauren 14, and Evan 10. Scott and his family currently reside in Springfield NJ.
Captain Kip Dangler - Kip Dangler was born and raised in West Orange. After graduating from Immaculate Conception High School in 1984, Firefighter Dangler attended County College of Morris and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1986. Then, he attended Jersey City State College and graduated in 1989 with a
BA degree in Fire Science. He was appointed to The West Orange Fire Department in May 1990 and has served the town for the past 24 years. Firefighter Dangler is a second generation township employee. His father, George, served as a West Orange Police Sergeant for 32 years, retiring in 1984. His brother, Darren, was a Captain with the West Orange Fire Department for 28 years and retired in 2011. The third generation of his family, his nephew, John Casiero, joined the West Orange Fire Department in March 2014. Firefighter Dangler has been certified in CPR and as a Emergency Medical Technician since joining the department in 1990. He also holds certification in Firefighter I and II, Incident Management level II, and Hazmat Awareness. Kip has been married to his wife, Eileen, for 20 years and they have two sons, Clayton and Kyle.
