WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Film Society kicks off its 10th anniversary celebration with the acclaimed film Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie this Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 PM at the AMC Theatre at the Essex Green Shopping Center in West Orange. This is the first theatrical showing in NJ since it opened earlier this year. Special guest, Co-Director Seth Kramer, a West Orange High School graduate, will introduce the film, and answer questions after the film. Stephen Whitty, Star Ledger film critic said, "The movie is not particularly respectful, or even barely polite. But it is all, nonetheless, entertaining — something Downey would have appreciated.... it places its subject in the larger context of a movement...he was the start of a national trend."
On September 29, the WOFS will present films created by its volunteer staff, who are all accomplished film makers. The program consists of Smile by Academy award-winner Patrick Wright (and others); a five minute short about the students at the Gregory School in West Orange; Portrait of an Old Toy Man by Andrew Ruotolo, a fifteen minute documentary that won a first prize at the Rahway Film Festival and Alaska, the World and Wally Hickel, a one-hour film made by West Orange resident and WOFS founder Kenneth Mandel and Ed Gray. It's a biography about a unique American politician who criticized his own party and paid the price. It's currently airing on public television stations across the country. "If I can toot my own horn for a minute", said Emmy award-winner Mandel, "it's one of the best documentaries I've made."
The West Orange Film Society, founded in 2003, hosts the NJ Young Film Makers Festival, the Black Maria Film Festival and created the West Orange Classic Film Festival program which runs from January to March every year. All programs are at the AMC Theatre at the Essex Green Shopping Center on Sundays at 2 PM. Admission is $10.00.
