WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Thursday, May 22, a half-million Americans will don their dungarees to honor the nation's veterans and raise funds for the G.I. Go Fund. "Jeans for Troops" day will bring awareness of the growing population of returning veterans struggling to find jobs and housing.

Township Clerk Karen Carnevale says, "This is the third year employees at Town Hall are participating in Jeans for Troops."

On Thursday employees will  "dress down" and donate $5 for the fund.  Each participating employee also receives a sticker to wear during the day.

According to the G.I. Go Fund website, "Upon their return from combat, veterans face enormous challenges transitioning back  to civilian life. Dealing with anything from battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), receiving VA health benefits, or facing financial hardships, our nation’s heroes often become overwhelmed".

Former Newark Mayor Cory Booker established a G.I. Go Fund Transition Center in Newark City that assists returning veterans in transitioning back into civilian life.  Veterans face huge challenges, whether Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), receiving VA health benefits, or dealing with financial hardships.

The Transition Center helps veterans with their benefits; helps them find employment; helps them further their education; and helps with homelessness and housing. Almost a third of the nation's homeless population is comprised of veterans.
