West Orange Community Asked to Provide Input for Board of Education Superintendent Search

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Board of Education held a Superintendent Search Forum for the community on Monday, Dec. 9, lead by Jane Kerschner and Charlene Peterson of the New Jersey School Boards Association. The West Orange BOE is compensating the New Jersey School Boards Association to assist in the recruitment process.
The NJSBA provided a questionnaire to the community asking the following questions:
Questions:1. What are the strengths and achievements of the West Orange School District and community?2. What critical issues will the school face in the next 3-4 years?3. What background/training/experience should the new superintendent have?4. What leadership style/personal characteristics are important in a new superintendent?Feel free to add other comments or information that you believe the search committee and/or Board of Education need to know.
The community is asked to send their responses to these questions by Dec. 19 to Charlene Peterson of the NJ School Boards Association either by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or mail to 413 W. State St., PO Box 909, Trenton, NJ 08605-0909. Please put "West Orange Search" in the Subject/RE line. The identity of those who respond will be kept confidential.
Criteria required for the new Superintendent will include:
a New Jersey School Administrator Certificate
High School experience preferred
Record of Achievement
Education leadership with strong interpersonal and communication skills
Peterson and Kerschner also began to set up a scheduled timeline of events for the process:
Advertisements in local and statewide news sources, associations, colleges, NJSBA, and more to be posted on Dec. 8 and Dec. 15 and Jan. 12, 2014. (December 8 ads not currently posted.)
Jan. 24 will be the deadline for applications.
A weighted pool of candidates will be presented to the BOE by the consultants and the board will select candidates to interview.
Dates to be Decided: The Board members meet for Superintendent contract training; first round of interviews conducted; second round of interviews conducted; references provided; references checked; in-district school visits held; finalist chosen; contract negotiations begin.
On April 1, 2014, the newly chosen Superintendent and contract are sent for approval to the Essex County Superintendent.
On May 1, 2014, the new Superintendent is publicly approved and announced.
On July 1, 2014, the new Superintendent begins work.
