WEST ORANGE, NJ - It was a fitting victory November 1 as the Boys Varsity Soccer team dominated their game against Glen Ridge, 2-0, with both goals scored by senior players on Senior Day.
The West Orange squad was able to get their weekend off to a good start as they came out of the gates roaring and dominating possession. The Mountaineers were able to create a surplus of chances.
“I think we controlled the game the whole time and played good soccer,” remarked West Orange Coach Doug Nevins
West Orange scored quickly in the first 90 seconds of the game when senior Michael Vargas ran down the right wing, and the Mountaineers were off to a 1-0 start.
West Orange continued to create several opportunities after the goal and attempted over 5 corner kicks in the first half alone. Finally, with about 7 and a half minutes left in the first half, senior Chase Bridgers scored the second and final tally of the game.
Coach Nevins liked how well his team was “keeping the ball and moving the ball.”
The second half was also dominated by the Mountaineers, but the Ridgers were able to create a few chances as they tried to get back into the game. However, a tandem of two goalies who played one half each, were able to hold the Ridgers off of the scoreboard.
Coach Nevins felt that this win would serve as momentum and called it the “fifth or sixth game in a row that they played really well.”
Senior players were also recognized at the game for their commitment to the team and the sport.
The win brought the Mountaineers record to 7-7-2. West Orange’s next game will be a state tournament game against Memorial next Tuesday in West New York, NJ on November 5.
