WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Boys Varsity Soccer team captured the North Jersey Section One, Group Four title 1-0 in a tight matchup against Bergen Tech Friday afternoon.
West Orange midfielder Sam Seidenfeld scored the only goal of the game when Michael Vargas took a corner fifteen minutes into the first half. The ball was deflected towards the top of the 18. Seidenfeld hit it once, and when it deflected back to him he volleyed the ball into the side corner.
The Mountaineers continued to dominate the game with great defensive action from centerbacks Ian Faloye, Mike Zarro, Tyler Fort-Forskey and Andrew Bannout. Diego Pedrido had three saves and held onto several hard shots to prevent Bergen Tech from finishing any rebounds.
Bergen Tech keeper David Heller had five saves and performed well despite Bergen Tech's loss.
WOHS School Boys Soccer Coach Doug Nevins was ebullient after the win, saying "Today was an unbelievable victory. After all we have been through this year to be champions is unreal."
Nevins continued, "We played really well against a big physical team on a bad grass field. Mike Zarro threw the ball in and when it got cleared Sam Seidenfeld volleyed it in for our goal. The defense led by Ian Faloye kept the shutout, and freshman Diego Pedrido was strong at the goal as well."
Prior to the start of the game, Bergen Tech presented West Orange with a signed ball for Matt Wilson, their teammate diagnosed with cancer only two weeks ago. Wilson is currently undergoing chemotherapy and his team has rallied behind him. There has been an outpouring of support from the soccer community in North Jersey as well.
West Orange heads into the Group 4 Semifinals against Millburn on Tuesday, November 19 at 7:30 pm in Somerville.
