West Orange Board of Education Begins Gearing Up for Start of School September 4

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Middle Schools have their Team Assignments and have begun receiving their schedules. West Orange High School mailed out student schedules at the end of last week, and bus passes for all students have been sent as well. Elementary school information is usually mailed out last.
If you did not receive bus pass information or information regarding middle and high school schedules, contact the office of your child's school for help.
Summer assignments are due soon after the start of the school year and the district recommends that parents check in with their children as to their progress on completion of the projects. While Elementary and Middle School assignments include recommended reading, students are encouraged to select books to enjoy over the summer.
“The assignments for the elementary grade level and middle school level are optional but recommended,” says Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Donna Rando, Ed. D. “It is advisable to review content learned in the previous year during the summer to keep one’s skill sets fresh. The research indicates that students who are engaged in learning during the summer have a greater opportunity for educational success in the following school year.”
Elementary school reading projects are turned in to their new classroom teacher during the first week of school. Middle school English Language Arts teachers will collect journals during the first two weeks of school. “There are no specified due dates for mathematics activities at elementary or middle school,” continued Dr. Rando.
At West Orange High School, it's standard for honors and AP students to have summer requirements in various types of courses, with AP assignments due September 4 and honors September 8. CP courses are due on September 12. Students registering for the school year after August 15 have an additional week to complete the work. Hard copies can be picked up in the Guidance Office at 51 Conforti Avenue.
Go to the district homepage at http://www.woboe.org, click on the “Summer Assignments and Reading Projects” link on the left and select the assignments pertaining to your child.
