WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Monday, the West Orange boys soccer team took on Montclair under the lights at Lincoln Field, in a perennial clash of state championship contenders. The game was a rematch of the 2012 NJISAA State Sectional finals.
In the playoff-like atmosphere the Montclair boys set the tone early. In the third minute Montclair’s Joseph Rodriguez scored on a strike from inside the box, narrowly eluding the stretched arm of West Orange goalkeeper Josh Feinblatt. In the sixteenth minute Montclair’s Jake Seaman headed a ball just over the cross bar. Possessing the ball for the better part of the first ten minutes, momentum was in Montclair’s favor.
The tide shifted around the twentieth minute after a huge save by West Orange’s Josh Feinblatt. The Mountaineers maintained possession and did not look back. In the 25th minute Ian Faloye put West Orange on the board after sending a throw-in from fellow defenseman Mike Zarro into the back of the net.
Carrying momentum from first half successes, the teams came out in the second half with a new demeanor and a clean slate. Both teams started to play small with the second half being dominated by the defensive play of West Orange’s back four.
“The back four were real good, Tyler Fort-Fosky played outstanding alongside Ian Faloye, Zach Brown, and Mike Zarro.” Says WOHS head coach Doug Nevins.
Fending off an onslaught of Montclair rushes, West Orange played Montclair to a 1-1 draw after two periods of overtime.
“This is always a good match. You can’t even look at the records" said MHS Head Coach Jack Weber.
The draw brings Montclair to a 5-2-1 record and West Orange to 2-3-2 on the year. West Orange is back in action on Wednesday at home against West Essex at 4 p.m.
