NORTH CALDWELL, NJ - Despite losing to Cranford in the Section 2, Group 3 final last week, the West Essex varsity baseball team put together a season with a lot more highs than lows.

The Knights finished the spring with an 18-9 record and had won five games in a row prior to Friday's loss to Cranford. After opening the season with three losses in its first four games, West Essex went 17-5 before losing in its final game.

Senior pitcher Max Karp had a spectacular season, going 8-2 with an earned-run average under 1.50 and leading the team in strikeouts on the mound. Karp, who struck out 77 batters in 60 innings, concluded his campaign with a two-hitter in a 4-2 victory over Nutley. In that game, junior shortstop Dominic Magliaro went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and senior outfielder Adam Farkas delivered a two-run single. Senior right-hander James Panzarino also turned in a solid season on the mound.

Panzarino kept his average right around .400 all season and senior outfielder Anthony Tornatore, who batted over .300, was also a consistent run producer. Other leading hitters for the Knights included Farkas, senior outfielder Kevin Fox, junior outfielder Joey Gonnella, Dominic and Luke Magliaro and junior third baseman Chris Pezzuti.
