West Essex Tops West Orange in Ice Hockey

WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Essex High School’s dominant play handed the West Orange High School Mountaineer Ice Hockey team a difficult loss on Friday at Codey Arena. The first period of the game produced seven goals for West Essex, setting the stage for its 12-1 victory.
West Essex took control of the first period, with Aron Augustitus scoring the first goal of the night for West Essex followed by a short-handed goal from Nick Parazine. Paranzine then scored, assisted by CJ Muelbauer. Henry Mead, Alex Cuozzo and Michael Ruggieri scored unassisted and Muelbauer scored again, with an assist from Connor Leach.
At the end of the first period, West Essex led, 7-0.
To start the second period, West Orange’s Alec Hill scored the first and only goal for West Orange. It was assisted by Jonathan Miller.
West Essex then followed up with a goal by Joe Chris, assisted by Michael Dominguez. Augustitus scored two more goals in the second, assisted by Cuozzo, Andrew Tetyevsky and Cuozzo. Michael Ruggieri had an unassisted goal followed by another goal by Cuozzo, assisted by Ruggieri and Augustitus.
The second period ended with another five goals by West Essex, to bring the score to 12-1. There was no scoring in the third period.
West Essex head coach, Marc Gregory, said, “It was a tough game to play. They certainly work hard and I wouldn’t want to take anything away from West Orange. But we were motivated tonight, and we needed this game to win”.
“West Orange Head coach, Eddie Scafidi, said, “It was brutal. The time off really hurt us, and we didn’t show up to play”.
Both teams next play on Feb. 10. The Mountaineers’ next game play Governor Livingston in Union while West Essex will play Randolph.
