NORTH CALDWELL, NJ - When West Essex Middle School seventh graders Elyssa Stabile of Fairfield and Mia DeMeola of Roseland first came to the middle school library, they were not sure where to find the special book sections such as sports and nonfiction.

The two students and all of the seventh graders at the middle school spent a day during reading classes participating in a new student scavenger hunt in the library. Elyssa and Mia found the nonfiction section and stopped to check out some of the books they might want to read. "This was very helpful because I did not know where the different book sections were," Mia said.
West Essex Middle School Librarian Catherine Spinella wanted to find a way help the new seventh graders learn their way around the library. So she organized a special scavenger hunt in the library last month for seventh graders and asked them to find everything from the different book sections to the copy machine. They also had to learn to use the online catalog.

Reading teacher Lanaya Torres showed students Sebi Morrello of North Caldwell, Kyle Gutowski of Roseland and Vasili Tsilionis of Roseland where they could return books at the book drop.
