Weekend of Wins for the Scotch-Plains Fanwood YMCA Gymnastics Teams

All three divisions of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Gymnastics Teams had competitions this past weekend, January 25-26, 2014. The ‘C’ Division team was competing in their first meet of the season and, for nine of the 14 member team, it was their very first competition ever! The C team hosted the Somerset Valley and South Mountain YMCAs on Saturday, January 25.
The C Division gymnasts competed in three age groups: 9 and under, 10&11 year olds, 12 and over. Four gymnasts from the FSPY team competed in the 9 and under age group – for each of them, it was their first time competing – and they all earned top honors. Ella Platts was awarded 2nd place on both the Balance Beam and Floor Exercise and 4th on Vault. Jillian Miele earned 1st place on the Balance Beam and 5th place on Vault. Liz Parvin captured 1st place on Floor Exercise and 5th on Balance Beam. Alexandra Dessart vaulted her way to 2nd place on the Vault.
In the 10 & 11 year old age group, 1st place All Around was awarded to first time competitor Naomi Southerland. Southerland also earned 1st place on Balance Beam and 2nd place on Vault, Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise. Second Place All Around went to Che Dashiell who captured 1st place on Floor Exercise, as well as 3rd on Vault and 4th on both Uneven Bars and Balance Beam. Twin sister Anina Dashiel placed 4th All Around, earning 2nd place on Vault, 3rd on Floor Exercise and 5th on Balance Beam. Zoe Wernsing took home 2nd place on Balance Beam and 5th place on Floor Exercise. Marlena Holston placed 4th on Floor Exercise. Lauren Fitzgerald’s Balance Beam routine was awarded 7th place in this very large age group. Madalyn McEvoy competed on both Vault and Balance, performing well in her first meet.
The 12 and over competitors were led by All Around 1st place winner, Elizabeth Kern. Kern was also awarded 1st place on Floor Exercise, 2nd on Uneven Bars and 3rd on Balance Beam. Nicalina DelRosario captured 2nd place on Balance Beam and Floor Exercise and 4th on Vault. The 1st place Balance Beam title was given to Sara Banasiak. Katyana Avila’s first ever competition performances on Vault and Balance Beam were very strong.
The team was excited to win their first meet 108.85 over Somerset Valley’s 106.35 and South Mountain’s 82.1.
Sunday morning saw the A & B Division teams travel to Madison Area YMCA. In the 12 and under age group, Ava McKenzie was awarded 2nd place All Around. McKenzie also earned 1st place on the Uneven Bars, 2nd on Vault and 3rd on Floor Exercise. Anna Decker placed 3rd All Around. Decker also received 2nd on the Uneven Bars, 3rd on Balance Beam and 4th on Floor Exercise. Lenore Ferguson wrapped up the FSPY team’s younger contingent, earning 3rd place on Vault and 4th place on Balance Beam.
In the 13 and over age group, Rachel Tang captured 1st place All Around . Tang also earned the 1st place honors on Vault, Uneven Bars and Balance Beam, with a 3rd place on Floor Exercise. Kristy Cerini was awarded 2nd place All Around. Cerini was the 1st place winner on Floor Exercise, backed up by her 2nd place on the Uneven Bars and 3rd place on Vault. Abby Kennedy rounded out the top of the podium for the FSPY team, bringing home the 3rd place All Around award. Kennedy also received 2nd place on Vault, 3rd place on the Uneven Bars and 4th place on Balance Beam.
Three gymnasts from the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA competed in the A Division competition, 16 & over age group. Abbie Fontana was awarded 2nd place All Around. Additionally, Fontana earned 1st place on Floor Exercise and 2nd on Vault. Lauren Lockfeld earned 1st place on Vault and Uneven Bars. Marissa DiBella’s Beam routine earned her 2nd place on that event. All three gymnasts earned the scores they needed to qualify for the Regional and National Championship meets later in the season.
The next home meet will be a ‘C’ Division meet on Saturday, March 15, 2014. The Early Spring Session of gymnastic classes at the Y begin on Monday, February 3. Limited spaces are still available. Register now and join the fun! Gymnastics classes offered at the YMCA include, parent-toddler and preschool classes. Gymnastics classes for school-age girls are offered Monday through Saturday at the Martine Avenue facility for beginners through advanced levels.
