FANWOOD, NJ -- The ongoing project to upgrade the New Jersey American Water distribution system continues in Fanwood, but not without complaints from local residents. A number of the borough’s homeowners are upset with damage caused to their property as the water company modernizes its infrastructure.
“I am very bitter about this project. They ruined my driveway and this meter is a way for them to charge you for more water usage,” said Cari Frederico. “With the water meter in the house, they only charged you for water used in your home. With the meter being on the curb, they will charge you for water used from the house to the curb, AKA leaks.”
Jesse Peterson, New Jersey American construction inspector, responded by saying that the company plans to do all of its service work first, and then all of the restoration work will be done at the end of the project. The target date for completion of the work is early November, but weather plays a factor.
“We put down top soil and seed. Anything currently filled with blacktop will be restored in cement. Many of the holes are a result of all the rain we’ve had,” Peterson explained. “We’re trying to handle every issue accordingly. People have issues and we expect to take care of everything that arises.”
“They had my issue resolved in a couple hours,” said Sunday Miller Asculai. “I had an issue today with a huge hole around the meter. I contacted the parks department who forwarded my email to the water company. They had it resolved in a couple hours, but they they’ve ruined my $2,000 sodded lawn that was done in May.”
Meanwhile, the project expands to other streets in Fanwood this week. American Water will begin working on Poplar Place, Clement Place and Winfield Place, starting on Tuesday, July 15, with crews on duty from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Water service may be interrupted in these locations for short periods. Fanwood Police will be on the scene to handle any traffic problems.
New Jersey American Water is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state.
