CLINTON, NJ - For the second straight game, the Watchung Hills boys lacrosse team ended up victorious in overtime, as they defeated North Hunterdon, 8-7.
The Warriors were coming off their first victory against Bridgewater-Raritan (in overtime), as they ended Monday with their first road win of the season.
At halftime, the Warriors trailed North Hunterdon, 5-2, but rebounded in the second half, outscoring the Lions, 5-2.
With 52 seconds left in the game, Alec Orazietti scored the game-tying goal that sent the game into overtime. Orazietti finished with three goals in the win.
In overtime, the Warriors scored their eighth and final goal, thanks to a Ryan Cunningham bullet past the goalie.
Cunningham had a stellar performance, as he scored five of the teams eight goals.
“It was really big for us, just to get some confidence going into the next half. We only had one goal, and we knew that we could play better. And I think that one goal just sparked us,” Cunningham said on the win.
Jack Ayre, the Warriors goalie, also posted a great game, holding the Lions to just seven goals; he also finished with a school-record 25 saves.
“We made a lot of mistakes in the first half, we lost our captain, Matt Rozmerski to injury and he was [about] 50 percent healthy for the rest of the game. I knew I needed to pick up the effort for the win and I kept our team within a reachable distance. There were contributions from the entire sideline and I was proud of my teammates,” said Ayre on the team win.
Despite being down for most of the game, the Warriors held their ground – offensively and defensively - when needed most.
Defenseman and Captain Matt Rozmerski commented on the team’s overall performance, saying, “Despite not playing our best brand of ball, we had an outstanding goalie performance out of Jack Ayre and never backed down. We fought until the end and we got the win.”
The Warriors will play the second of their two-game road stint on Wednesday April 23, against Moorestown.
