MERCER COUNTY, NJ - The Watchung Hills Regional High School Ultimate Frisbee teams competed in the NJ Spring Devyl Tournament on April 26 and 27.
On Saturday, the girls team played three games, winning 2 out of 3. In the first game, Westfield came out on top, 9-3.But Watchung Hills rebounded and won the next two against West Winsdor/Plainsboro South,15-8, and against Columbia High School, 12-1. The highlight was a Callahan point scored by sophomore, Joy Rizzoli, which happens very rarely in any game.
Men’s Varsity started off well on Saturday with two wins and one loss. Watchung Hills shut out Columbia HS JV-A ,15-0 and beat Manalapan HS, 15-5. In their third game, Westfield topped Watchung Hills,15-7. In the playoff rounds on Sunday, Watchung Hills lost the first game against West Windsor /Plainsboro South HS. They had a tough first half with the score 8-3 but they scrambled back to within three,14-11. Watchung Hills won the next two, after losing several key players to injuries. First against Columbia HS JV-A with a score of 15-4 and second against Manalapan HS with a score of 13-4.
Also on Sunday, the Men’s JV team won all three games. Watchung Hills shut out Westfield HS -X, 15-0. The team was led by sophomore Ari Scherzer and freshman Justin Eng. In game two against Columbia HS JV-B, Watchung Hills won 15-2 with stand out performances by sophomore Ben Scherzer, freshman Anthony Rodrigues and junior Andre Gou. In the final game against Westfield MS, they won 12-9 led by freshmen Ethan Tu, Dillon Monti and David Lui along with sophomores Ben and Ari Scherzer.
