WEST CALDWELL, NJ - Washington School was one of only three area schools selected by the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) for a special visit from Dr. Suess’s Cat in the Hat. On Monday, Feb. 4, the Cat visited the school to help kick off Read Across America.
Wearing replicas of the cat’s famous hat, the second graders at the school performed the well-known “Green Eggs and Ham” for him, sharing stories of their favorite books and why they love to read.

“I love to read,” said one second grader. “I think that "Fox in Socks" is my favorite.”

The Cat, a retired school teacher and his retired librarian wife, volunteer with the NJEA to visit schools while dressed in the famous Dr. Seuss costume provided by NJEA. The main focus is to foster a love of books and to encourage students to keep reading.

“I selected the second graders to welcome the Cat because we have been performing reader’s theater scripts in the media center,” said media specialist Cindy Kellenberger. “The students really enjoy this activity and this seemed the perfect way to present to the Cat.”

To earn a school visit from the Cat, Kellenberger had to register with the NJEA. “I have registered many times before, but was never selected for a visit,” said Kellenberger. “So, this year I registered in September, hoping to provide a special event during Read Across America Week.” Although Read Across America Week begins in late February, in advance of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on March 2, Kellenberger was assigned an early February visit.
“It actually worked out perfectly,” said Kellenberger. “Now, we have a month-long reading celebration!”
