WARREN, NJ - When Superstorm Sandy was on its way to hit New Jersey on October 28, 2012, Warren resident Judith Weiniger created a Facebook group, the “Warren Township Community Forum.” Within a few days 60 people joined and within the week the number had grown to 1000.
The goal of the group was to share information with residents and businesses in town. Residents needed to know where to get gas, what roads were open, where trees and wires were down and what stores and restaurants were open.
Today, there are 1600 members of the group and it is used for everything from looking for pets, to getting recommendations on local service providers to coordinating fundraising efforts.
Weiniger, along with co-administrator Bob Morrison, Monica Giglio, Linda Chen, Kristina Koltunowicz and Laura Nacamulli helped to organize an anniversary party for the group.
A nice showing of the forum's members, including Mayor Vic Sordillo and Township Committeewoman Carolann Garofala, gathered to celebrate its one year anniversary at Saly G's on Monday Oct. 28. The consensus was," what a fun night!" "It was great putting faces to names, and getting out from our computers." "It was like meeting up with old friends."
Mayor Sordillo urged everyone to go to the November 13 celebration of Warren at Watchung Hills. The Township Committee is recognizing all of those who make the community special at their meeting on Nov. 13 to be held at the High School. All residents and businesses are invited to join them for this celebration. Refreshments will be served in the south building cafeteria after the meeting.
