PATERSON, NJ - A winter filled with snow and unusually cold temperatures may have helped suppress violent crime in the city.

For the three months of January, February and March, violent crime in Paterson fell by 24 percent, from 346 reported incidents in 2013 to 263 this winter, according to statistics provided by the Paterson Police Department. Not only was the weather especially harsh this past winter, but it followed a winter that was unseasonably mild and largely devoid of snow in 2013.

Homicides, however, doubled, from three to six, in Winter 2014. While aggravated assaults occurred at virtually the same rate, robberies fell from 214 to 136, a 36 percent decrease.

Property crime also dropped by 12 percent over the same period, with burglaries off by 26.5 percent.

The overall crimes in Paterson were down 15 percent in the winter months.
