PATERSON, NJ - Authorities on Sunday released no new details on Saturday's fatal shooting on Redwood Avenue involving a Paterson police officer.

"Due to the active and on-going nature of the investigation, our office can confirm that a police involved shooting occurred yesterday morning at 10 Redwoord Ave. in Paterson which resulted in the death of a civilian,'' said senior assistant Passaic County prosecutor Neil Cleary. "The matter is being investigated and will be reviewed by our office. Typically, police involved shootings are also reviewed by a grand jury."

As part of the standard procedure for shootings that involve city officers, the investigation is being handled by the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

A report on northjersey.com said the deceased, Salvador Rosario, suffered mental problems and his family had called police when he locked himself in the bathroom. The story said the officers broke down the bathroom door and and one of them shot Rosario when he made a move towards them with a hammer.
