PATERSON, NJ – A veteran teacher at Kennedy High School was arrested Saturday night on charges that he offered a student $50 for sex, according to authorities.

The teacher, 50-year-old Thomas Weir of Monticello, N.Y., knew the boy from school and then contacted the student through Facebook instant messaging and arranged to meet the student at a local restaurant on Saturday, authorities said.

"The relationship was initiated in school and continued on Facebook,'' said Chief Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor Joseph Del Russo. "There were multiple messages. The messages were designed to convince the boy to engage in a sexual act."

The boy was not a student in Weir class, but attended classes in a room nearby, Del Russo said.

Detectives arrested Weir in the restaurant’s parking lot, according to a press release issued by Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik. It was not clear where Weir intended to take the boy for sex, Del Russo said.

Weir has worked for Paterson Public Schools for about 21 years, according to authorities.

He was charged with attempted sexual assault, attempted endangering the welfare of a child, luring/enticing a child, and official misconduct. As of Sunday night, bail had not been set yet.

Authorities have declined to release the student's age.

When asked whether there was evidence that Weir approached other students, Del Russo said, "The investigation is ongoing.''

The investigation is being conducted by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit (SVU), the Passaic County Sheriff’s Internet Crimes against Children Unit (ICAC) and the Paterson Public Schools Department of School Security.
