Upcoming Events at American Labor Museum

HALEDON, NJ - –  The American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark is proud to offer a two-part program entitled Two Cities on Strike, Lawrence, Massachusetts & Paterson, NJ, with a teachers’ workshop to be held on Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 and motor coach tour of the labor and immigrant heritage sites of the City of Paterson on Wednesday, May 16th, 2012.

Educators and the general public are invited to attend the Two Cities on Strike Workshop and join the Bus Tour, which will compare and contrast Lawrence ’s 1912 Bread and Roses Strike and Paterson ’s 1913 Silk Strike.  Educators who attend will receive a Professional Development Certificate. 

On Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 the Two Cities on Strike teachers’ workshop will be held at the Museum from 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM, with lunch served at midday.  Workshop plans include presentations by award-winning educators, including labor and working class historian, Dexter P. Arnold, Bruce Watson author of Mills, Migrants and the Struggle for the American Dream (2005) and Angelica Santomauro, Ed.D., Director of the American Labor Museum .  Methods of integrating labor and immigrant studies into the curriculum will be introduced and, teaching materials for grades 4 – 12 will be distributed.

On Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 the motor coach tour will depart from the Museum at 9 AM and tour historic labor and immigrant sites of the City of Paterson, NJ and vicinity.  Period-costumed guides will provide historical narrative and opportunity for discussions.  The bus will return for lunch served from 12 – 1 PM under the grape arbor of the Museum’s Old World Gardens . 

The admission of $65.00 for Museum members and $75.00 for non-members includes lunches and teaching materials for the teachers’ workshop and bus tour.  For those who opt to attend the workshop only, the admission fee is $45. for Museum members and $50. for non-members.  For those who opt to join the bus tour only, the cost is $20. for Museum members and $25. for non-members.

 his project is funded, in part, by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College , through a general operating support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State.

The Botto House, home of the American Labor Museum , is located at 83 Norwood Street in Haledon , New Jersey .  It was the meeting place for over 20,000 silk mill workers during the 1913 Paterson Silk Strike. The Museum offers a free lending library, restored period rooms, changing exhibits, Museum Store, Old World Gardens , educational programs and special events.
