Unbeaten Scotch Plains-Fanwood Girls Soccer Defeats Kearny, 7-2

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - The Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls soccer team defeated Kearny, 7-2, on Saturday at Wexler Field to improve to 8-0.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood erupted for six unanswered goals in the second half, with Tori Baliatico leading the way with two goals and Katie Harper adding four assists.
“I thought the team played very well,” said Scotch Plains-Fanwood coach Ewing. “The girls made good second-half adjustments and really mixed it up.”
Kearny scored in the first two minutes of the game, followed by a 10th minute goal by SPF’s Paige Heiden. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood came out of the half with five goals in the first 8:00, by Kelly Yeager (42nd minute), Tori Baliatico (43rd, 47th minute), Katie Harper (44th minute) and Sarah DiIorio (50th minute). “The 1-1 tie at halftime really inspired us to work harder,” said Baliatico. “The start of the second half really changed the momentum of the game in our favor.”
Corina Checchio added another goal in the 62nd minute of the game to make the score 7-1. Kearny’s second and final goal didn’t come until the last three minutes of the game. “We knew we had it in us,” Heiden said. “Coach helped us realize that we could do it, and the team really picked it up in the second half.”
Scotch Plains-Fanwood aims to remain undefeated this Tuesday against Gov. Livingston at Wexler Field.
