MILLBURN, NJ – Flywheel Sports, Millburn's indoor cycling mecca, will be hosting two special spinning events for charity this month.
“Flywheel is all about being part of the community,” said Gina Racz. “Being involved in things that people in town are passionate about is what we are passionate about,” she added.
On Wednesday, March 13, there will be a ‘Spin-a-thon’ at 7 p.m. to benefit Opportunity Project, a Millburn-based group working to improve the lives of people with brain injuries. The date was chosen because March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and March 13 is Congressional Brain Injury Awareness Day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are between 1.6 and 3.8 million sports-related concussions in the United States every year. For young people, sports are the second leading cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) after motor vehicle accidents. TBI caused by concussion can be prevented. Flywheel is participating in this effort to raise money for the cause and awareness of the issue. Opportunity Project has established a place and developed programs to assist those with brain injuries to achieve self-esteem, growth and independence. To register online, go to www.opportunityproject.org or call 973-921-1000 x105.
On Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m., Flywheel will host ‘Be Brave n’ Fly’ to benefit the Max Cure Foundation, which raises money and awareness for pediatric cancer causes. Funds raised via this ride will directly benefit families in and around Millburn who have children battling cancer.
The Max Cure Foundation works to advance cures for pediatric cancers, funds the development of less toxic treatments for children, and provides low-income families who are battling pediatric cancer emotional and financial support. To participate, go to maxcurefoundation.eventbrite.com to register.
“These types of events are exciting for us, because they allow us to do what we do, but for a good cause,” Racz noted.
Flywheel is located at 351 Millburn Avenue, Millburn.
