SPARTA, NJ -  At the Township Council meeting on Tuesday, August 12 Mayor Molly Whilesmith welcomed two of Sparta’s newest police officers, though they are not exactly new to Sparta.  Patrolmen Arlene Lippencott and Thomas Snyder previously served in the Sparta Police department but were released in 2010 due to budget constraints.

During the separation Lippencott served as a New Jersey State Park police officer and Snyder served in the Hopatcong police department.

Funding for officers were part of the 2014 budget to prepare for the three senior officers scheduled to retire in February of 2015.  Lippencott and Snyder started back to work in Sparta on Wednesday, August 6.

At the start of the meeting Whilesmith also read a proclamation Supporting the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2014 Statewide Crackdown.  The Proclamation said, in part, that “impaired drivers on our nation’s roads kill someone every 30 minutes, 50 people per day and almost 18,000 people each year and 19% of motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey in 2012 were alcohol related.”

The proclamation recognizes the summer season and the Labor Day holiday are “traditionally times of gatherings that involve alcohol.”  Law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey have been asked by the State of New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to participate in this initiative.  The efforts will increase enforcement of impaired driver laws between August 15 and September 1, 2014.  The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over project includes increasing awareness of the dangers of driving while impaired.
