PATERSON, NJ - City police arrested two 19-year-olds Sunday night after responding to reports of shots being fired in the 4th Ward.
Police officers Rafael Hernandez and Christopher Ravallese were on their way to 12th Avenue and Straight Street to investigate a report of gunshots at about 10:40 pm when they spotted four men hanging around at the corner of Auburn Street and 12th Avenue, according to Lt. Richard Reyes.
When the officers approached the men, two of them started to run down 12th Avenue, Reyes said. The officers chased them and saw one of the men, Eric Pena of Putnam Street, toss away the gun, Reyes said.
Hernandez and Ravallese ended up catching the two suspects and then found the discarded gun, Reyes said.
Pena was charged with various weapons offenses, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice, Reyes said. The other suspect, Jamar Williams of Montgomery Street, was charged with hindering an investigation and obstruction of justice, Reyes said.
