PATERSON, NJ – Authorities have made arrests in two separate Paterson killings – one a shooting earlier this month at a 3rd Ward city housing project and the other a fatal fight in the 1st Ward in March.

Police arrested 22-year-old Sincere Merritt and charged him with murder on Thursday when he appeared in Superior Court to be sentenced on drug offenses. Merritt is accused of killing 22-year-old Jerry Clyburn on the morning of June 2 outside the Riverview Towers on Plesinger Place, police said.

Authorities did not disclose the motive in the killing. At the time of the incident, police said a group of men were hanging around outside at about 10:30 am when someone showed up and started shooting at the crowd. Eighteen-year-old Karlton Kibbler was wounded in the incident.

Meanwhile, at 9 am on Monday morning, 39-year-old DaWayne Miles of N. 4th Street went to police headquarters to surrender himself on manslaughter charges, said Lt. Richard Reyes. Police had issued a warrant for his arrest back in March. Miles allegedly had a fight with 49-year-old Joe Louis Gray Jr. near 49 N. Main Street on March 8 and Gray died from injuries from the brawl.

The same squad of detectives worked on both cases. The group was headed by Sgt. Dave Scialla and included Detectives Steve Leishman, Jack DeSalvo and Steve Iacuzzo. They worked with Passaic County Prosecutor’s detectives Tony Girgenti and Mark Peterson.
