Tuxes & Tails Soiree Raises $50K for Animal Shelter in South Orange

SUMMIT, NJ – The Jersey Animal Coalition raised $50,000 at its fundraising event, Tuxes & Tails Soiree, on Oct. 13 at the Grand Summit Hotel in Summit.
The gala featured auction items, presentations and entertainment, with sponsors providing a variety of unique objects and prizes. Prizes included included tickets to a “Jack Hana: Into the Wild” show at the Mayo Center for the Performing Arts, custom jewelry, a three-night stay at a Las Vegas hotel and New York Giants tickets.
“The South Orange and Maplewood communities are our life-blood,” said JAC Director Cecily Kamps in an e-mail interview. “This event was held so that we may continue to serve those communities through rescue and awareness efforts.”
Kamps said the soiree had successfully fulfilled the organization’s mission in providing life-saving opportunities for animals and establishing a network for pet lovers. Its key mission, she said, is JAC’s maintenance of a no-kill haven for abandoned dogs and cats.
“Our mission is to preserve life,” she said. “At its base, this means that we care for many animals that are often difficult to place for extended periods of time while they await their forever home."
Kamps said funds from the Tuxes & Tails Soiree help with the medical, physical and often emotional challenges that come with an animal shelter.
JAC has various plans for fundraising in the future.
“We plan to foster new partnerships with local businesses, city officials and other rescue organizations in an effort to raise awareness and become a true ally to our communities,” Kamps said.
JAC is a nonprofit, all-volunteer coalition established in 1989. The organization provides homeless dogs and cats with medical attention, shelter and boarding, while finding them permanent homes. The organization has rescued more than 6,500 stray and abandoned pets. JAC promotes spay/neuter, reunite owners with their lost pets and educates the public about responsible pet ownership.
The JAC also assists low-income individuals with food and medical care for their pets.
The shelter is located at 298 Walton Ave., South Orange. It is open for adoptions Tuesday through Sunday.
