NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - TryCAN and New Providence Recreation are putting together a camp specifically for special needs kids this summer.

TryCAN Pioneer Playground Camp (TPPC) at Lions Park will run from for two weeks, July 21-25 and July 28-Aug. 1, from noon to 2:30 p.m.  Campers may sign up for one of the weeks or both. The site provides lots of shade, playground equipment and open space. Children with special needs ages 5-11 will be grouped according to age and ability.

At TPPC, kids will have plenty of opportunities to be engaged and have fun while participating in activities that will increase self-esteem and confidence. Recreational activities will be similar to those offered in typical day camps, but will focus on social interaction, sensory integration, coordination, sequencing, creativity and following direction.

The camp’s center/station approach will provide daily options to explore activities in arts and crafts for fine motor development, sports, dance and other physical activities for gross motor skills, games for socialization and playground play for general development and exploration.

Two certified, active special education teachers will serve as directors with additional support from staff as well as trained TryCAN Peer Mentors.

Registration may be done by visiting the New Providence Recreation website at www.newprov.org and selecting the Online Registration link. The program is under New Providence Recreation and 2014 Youth Summer. There are no residency restrictions, and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Contact New Providence Recreation at (908) 464-4430 for further details.
