Truck Hits Watchung Avenue Overpass; DWI Arrest

CHATHAM, NJ. -  Jose Gamboa, 38, of Paterson was charged with careless driving after the truck he was operating hit a railroad bridge overpass, and Darlene Ross, 47, of Chatham was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and failure to keep right, according to a report by the borough police.

On July 25 at 2:04 p.m., patrolman Andrew Chase investigated a one-vehicle accident on Watchung Avenue at the railroad bridge. A truck driven by Gamboa was traveling west on Watchung Avenue when it struck the overpass. Gamboa stated that he thought it was safe to continue because he believed his truck was 11’0” high and the bridge was marked 11”0.” He was able to drive his truck from the scene and he was issued a summons for careless driving.

On July 25 at 11:30 p.m., patrolman Roy George was on patrol when he noticed a 2008 Nissan traveling west on Watchung Avenue at approximately 10 MPH. As he followed the car on Watchung Avenue, it straddled the center line on several occasions. He stopped the car on Washington Avenue and made contact with the driver, Darlene Ross. Ross exhibited signs of intoxication and she was arrested after performing several field sobriety tests. At headquarters, she was administered breath tests, processed, and then released to a family member.

On July 26 at 9:35 a.m., patrolman Andrew Chase investigated a two-car accident on Main Street near Hillside Avenue. A 2011 Lexus driven by Lois Lipari, 68, of Morris Plains, was pulling out of a parking space when she struck a passing car. The other car was a 2008 Toyota driven by Wayne Zalutko, 55, of Kenilworth. Both cars were driven from the scene and Lipari was issued a summons for careless driving.
