TransOptions Incents Walking and Promotes Safety Non-Profit Hosts Free Walking Challenge During October

Get up, get out and walk this October is the challenge from TransOptions. The northwest New Jersey non-profit is hosting their second annual “Walk this Way” Challenge from October 1 to 31, 2012 with dual goals - to promote walking as transportation and increase awareness of safe walking tips.
The Walk this Way Challenge is not a race. It’s a free and flexible “challenge.” Pedestrians of all ages and abilities including kids, seniors, commuters, co-workers, friends and neighbors are encouraged to walk safely, at their own pace, where and when they choose during October. Participants register online and track their miles each time they walk, entering their weekly distance online to qualify for prices.
Registering for the Walk this Way Challenge is free and takes just a minute at TransOptions.org. The first 150 people to register receive a pedometer to track their miles along with a reflective tag to attach to clothing.
As an added incentive to walk more and walk often, prize drawings will be held throughout the month for registered participants. A $25 gift card will be awarded weekly and three $50 gift cards will be awarded at the conclusion of the Challenge for most miles walked, most number of days walked and most team miles.
“We’re encouraging participants to walk as an alternate way to get around where feasible. Walking to school, to the store, in town and on local park trails are other ways that miles can really add up while keeping carbon pollutants from the air,” comments John F. Ciaffone, TransOptions President. “We’re also increasing awareness of how to walk safely and be seen especially at this time of year when daylight hours are getting shorter,” he adds.
The benefits of walking add up, too. Walking just one mile during the day saves one pound of pollution from entering the atmosphere. Walking more and driving less saves fuel. Plus, you’ll burn 95 calories.
Steps Distance Calories Air Pollution Saved
2,000 1 Mile 95 Calories 1.0 lbs. of CO2
4,000 2 Miles 189 Calories 2.0 lbs. of CO2
