ESSEX FELLS, NJ - Today, Tuesday, December 11th, is sure to be a memorable one in Essex Fells.  Members of the Essex Fells Foundation for Educational Excellence in cooperation with the Essex Fells School Parent Teacher Association have jointly organized a unique selection of houses for their Holiday Home Tour, which is unlike any other in the state, or for that matter, in the country.  The tour of 8 homes will run from 10am to 2pm today.

Essex Fells Mayor, Edward Abbot, calls this town “our beloved little borough,” and it’s no wonder.   Many houses in the Fells are exclusive, custom-built, architect-designed creations, and the decor inside further express the owner’s taste and individuality.   With only 700 homes in the town of 1.4 square miles, the average house value is $1.6 million.

Committee member, Dara Zweig, explains, “We know this House Tour will offer participants the rare opportunity to peek inside the distinguished hamlet of Essex Fells, it’s one of the first planned communities in the United States and it’s also the smallest community in Essex County.”

Maggie O'Connor, Co-Chair of the Home Tour and Boutique Committee, described the details of today’s event;  “Every home on this tour will highlight a variety of decorating approaches.  It’s our hope that people will be enriched with ideas for their personal decor in their own homes. We are all getting excited for this day!”

The event is reported to offer, “a varied mix of houses on the tour, from Grand to Cozy, Tudor to Colonial, newly built to older,” and is set to showcase “some of the most notable and architecturally appealing homes in Essex Fells.”  To express the spirit of the Holidays, many local florists, artists, designers and home-related vendors have personally decorated the Tour homes.

Running concurrently with the Home Tour, and remaining open until 5pm, will be the delightful Holiday Boutique at the Essex Fells Country Club, located at 219 Devon Road.  Coordinators describe the Boutique as featuring over 40 vendors offering “hand-made artisan collections,  jewelry, fashion accessories, decorative home items, holiday decorations, stationery, purses,  clothing for women and stocking stuffers.”

Vendors are scheduled to include:

This year, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Tour organizers are seeing to it that a substantial portion of their profits will be donated to the New Jersey schools that were “deeply affected by the storm.”

“Our theme is ‘Jersey Strong,” explained Dara Zweig.  We are going to donate fifty percent of all proceeds to those schools that are still struggling to get back to a daily routine, and need to restock all of their supplies.”

Debra Tedesco, President of the Essex Fells Foundation for Educational Excellence, expressed: “Essex Fells School volunteers knew that we had to rally together and help the schools that were affected by Hurricane Sandy.  We realized that many of those school’s  fundraisers would have to be cancelled or postponed. It was clear to us that if we did not help the students of those impacted schools, then those students would not be able to enjoy the many activities funded by their various school organizations. Right now, their parents simply don’t have the time or the resources to focus on fundraising for their schools. They are rebuilding their homes, their lives, and just trying to survive."

Short Hills’ Bollinger Insurance company is a major benefactor of the Home Tour and Boutique.  “As the sponsor of this wonderful event, we are pleased to support the Essex Fells School Parent Teacher Association and the Essex Fells Foundation for Educational Excellence,”  said Dianna Linnet, Assistant Vice-President of Bollinger’s Private Client Division.   “Because of the business we are in, I know first-hand that many Bollinger clients suffered significant storm damage from Sandy, especially those located in coastal communities.  I am particularly grateful for the organizer’s decision to donate fifty percent of the proceeds to the New Jersey shore schools which were directly impacted by the storm.“

Essex Fells Foundation for Educational Excellence
“The Foundation was established to address threats to the high quality of education at the Essex Fells School from dwindling state aid and from state-imposed limits on the annual school budget.  In order to continue the legacy of educational excellence at the Essex Fells School, programs and resources beyond state mandates were deemed essential.  A true cross-section of community members established the Foundation in 1994 to provide support to public school education.  The founding members consisted not only of parents of school-age children, but also of town leaders, Essex Fells School alumni, senior citizens and many other residents who wished to preserve the excellence of our school. Since the Foundation's inception in 1994, it has made grants in excess of $1,000,000 to the Essex Fells School.  From technology to cultural arts to teacher development, the Foundation has played an integral role in preserving the quality of an Essex Fells School education.”
