Three South Orange Homes Targeted in Burglaries

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Three South Orange homes in the same general area were broken into on Friday, and one home owner spotted a burglar fleeing from his residence.
A North Woods Drive resident told police that at 9:45 p.m. he came home to see someone running from the rear of the home. He found someone had gained entry to the home by breaking a side window with a lawn ornament. The resident told police that the master bedroom had been ransacked but nothing was taken. A search by the Essex County K-9 unit did not turn up the burglar.
A North Ridgewood Road resident said her home alarm went off at 2:30 a.m., and when she investigated she found the back door was open. She told police that someone had entered through an unlocked back door and taken her purse, which was hanging from the door.
A Meadowbrook Lane resident told police she heard a noise at 3:15 a.m., and when she went into the kitchen, she discovered someone had entered the home and taken a laptop, a watch, a wallet and personal identification cards. Police said there was no sign of a forced entry.
In other police news:
A female Seton Hall University student was robbed on Sept. 11 while she was walking on Wilden Place at 8:15 p.m. She described her attacker as a black male between 20 and 25 years old, wearing beige cargo shorts and riding a BMX-style bicycle. She told police he threw her to the ground and took her cell phone before fleeing east into Newark. No weapons were involved. Detectives are investigating.
Detectives also are looking for a man who robbed a Seton Hall University employee at 3:30 p.m. in a campus parking lot adjacent to Ward Place. The victim told police the man, who fled in a silver Jeep Cherokee, grabbed her purse, which contained her identification and a Samsung smart phone.
A South Orange Avenue resident told police he was attached by five men when he was walking in the area of South Orange Avenue and Prospect Street at 2 a.m. on Sept. 8. He told police his attackers called his name as they punched and kicked him. They did not take anything from the victim.
Someone entered an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway on Ward Place, removing a key belonging to another vehicle. The incident occurred between 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 and 7 a.m. Sept. 10.
- Cash was stolen from the kitchen of a South Orange Avenue resident sometime before 10 a.m. on Sept. 8. Police said there was no sign of a forced entry. Power tools were stolen from a vacant building on Berkeley Avenue between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 7. Police said the thief broke a pane of glass on a rear door to gain entry to the building.
