PATERSON, NJ - A fight in the 1st Ward early Saturday morning ended with three men being wounded, including one who authorities say may have accidentally shot himself in the foot.
At about 12:40 am, police responded to the corner of N. 7th and Temple streets on a report of shots being fired and found 34-year-old Fashine Ali of West Broadway wounded in the foot. Shortly after Ali was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, two other men arrived at the emergency room with gunshot wounds in the arm, police said.
"During the subsequent investigation, detectives with the Cease-Fire Unit identified Fashine Ali as the alleged shooter in the incident,'' said Sgt. Patrick Murray. "The motive for the altercation is being investigated at this time. Detectives are looking into the origin of Mr. Ali’s gunshot wound, and cannot rule out possible accidental self-infliction at this time.''
The two victims, both men, were a 37-year-old resident of Presidential Boulevard and 42-year-old resident of N. 5th Street, police said.
Ali has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and various weapons offenses.
"Mr. Ali is currently under police guard and will be detained at the Paterson Police cell block upon hospital release,'' Murray said. "The investigation is continuing, and police are asking that anyone with information contact Detective Flores or Detective Polio of the Paterson Police Cease-Fire Unit at 973-321-1342, or the Paterson Police anonymous tips line at 973-523-TIPS."
