Three Locker Robberies at JCC and Warrant Arrests Top Police Blotter News for April 15-22

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Three locker break ins in one week at the Jewish Community Center and Warrant Arrests top this week's West Orange Police Blotter news.

April 15

Theft: Between January 15 and April 15, victim claims approximately $10,000 in jewelry went missing from his residence.  The housekeeper may be a suspect.

April 16

Theft: JCC, Northfield Avenue.  Victim reported her Iphone 4S was taken from the ledge of the Stairmaster she was working out on.  Phone has Track my Phone App and victim is insured.

Tyjuan Gary, age 19, of Swaine Place, West Orange, was approached by police after his description fit that of a robbery suspect.  Tyjuan was approached and found to be rolling a marijuana cigarette.  He was arrested and provided a false name to police but was correctly identified via outstanding warrants in Newark totalling $5,200.00.  Gary was charged with Possession of Marijuana under 50 grams; Possession of Paraphernalia; Hindering Apprehension; paced in a cell awaiting pickup by Newark PD.

April 17

Ahmed Salem, age 19, of Bayonne, was arrested after being stopped at Central Avenue and Valley Road for a MV violation.  After police had Salem exit the vehicle, a sealed glasine bag with a white powdery substance (suspected to be heroin)  inside  and a rolled up dollar bill were found.  Salem was arrested and charged with Possession of CDS Heroin, Poss of CDS Marijuana, and Poss of CDS in a motor vehicle.

April 18

Attempted Robbery: Attempted robbery at Wells Fargo, 412 Pleasant Valley Way. Video showed a black male, thin, approximately 5'7-5'10 wearing light colored sleeveless vest over a long sleeved sirt, khaki colored hat (cap), sunglasses, and plaid shirt.  He handed a note to the teller that said "Robbery. Give me all your hundred dollar bills." No weapon was shown, and teller told suspect safe was closed and they had no big bills in their drawer.  Suspect departed on foot and may have entered a red SUV.

Warrant Arrest: Michael Street, 33, of West Orange, was arrested as he walked on Washington Street near Columbia Street.  Suspect was known by police to have outstanding warrants in Glen Ridge, Newark and Bloomfield totaling $500.00.  

April 20

Burglary/Theft to Motor Vehicle: A guest at the Residence Inn at 107 Prospect Avenue notified police that his 2008 unlocked Honda was entered by unknown actors and a tool bag valued at $600 taken from the cargo area.

Motor Vehicle Stop-Obstruction: Shamel Esperance, 20, of West Orange, a known Bloods gang member, was observed by police in a 2002 BMW 540 (alleged to possibly been involved in robberies) on Whittingham Place slowing down to approach a pedestrian known to police for narcotics use and drug dealing. Police stopped the vehicle and Esperance exited and began walking away.  Police pursued the suspect and he was placed under arrest for obstruction.  Police discovered possible marijuana and CDS in the vehicle and suspect was charged with Obstruction and Hindering Apprehension, Possession of Marijuana under 50 grams and Possesion with Intent to Distribute Marijuana.  Bail was set at $5,000.00 and a warrant check revealed an additional $383.00 warrant. He was placed in a celll pending bail.

April 21

Burglary to Motor Vehicle: Victim reports that unknown actor entered his unlocked 2005 Hyundai Sonata on Orange Heights Avenue and ransacked it, though nothing appeared to have been taken. (7:04 pm)

Burglary to Motor Vehicle: Victim reports that the rear window of his 2002 Honda Accord on Yale Terrace was shattered and a black laptop top along with personal items were taken.  Victim's property was recovered and all items recovered.  (9:39 pm).

Shoplifting: Macy's reported the theft of a Michael Kors handbag valued at $190.46.  A male and female exited through the Prospect Avenue entrance and took off in a blue 2006 Toyota Matrix.  Surveillance footage is available.

Shoplifting: James Aguiar, 21, of Montclair, was arrested at Walter Bauman Jewelers in connection with two separate shoplifting incidents that occurred in Orange. Suspect was attempting to sell the stolen jewelry, valued at $385.00, to Walter Baumann Jewelers, in merchandise stolen from CBL Fine Art earlier in the week.  A check of the suspect's motor vehicle revealed items stolen from Orange businesses totaling $860.00.

April 22

Theft: A JCC 16 year old male  could not open the locker he had used to store his personal items.  After an employee used a master key to unlock it, it was discovered the personal items were missing, including an Iphone 4S and $100 in cash.  

Theft: A 17 year old male victim reported the theft of his Black Iphone 4S from a locker at the JCC after he could not open the lock and an employee used a master key to open it.  Only the phone was missing.

April 23

Theft of Motor Vehicle: A 2007 4 door Gray BMW was reported stolen from Ash Avenue.  Victim is insured.
