BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Three Girl Scouts, all eighth graders at Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School, completed their Silver Award project at their former elementary school.

Ariel Staffin, Rachel White and Annie Cassidy worked with Van Holten Primary School art teacher Brian Goteiner to create a project for 16 third and fourth graders to paint a mural at the school. The girls drew the mural, and the students helped them paint it.

The mural itself was a collection of favorite memories from Van Holten, all gathered from current Van Holten students.

"When we first thought of the project, we weren't really sure how we were going to do it," the girls said.

"We really like our school and our art teacher, and we wanted to do something to give back to it," Cassidy added.

The goal for the project was to give the kindergarteners at the school something to look forward to, and the fourth graders something to look back on.

The finished mural will be hung in the hallway leading down to the gym in the school.

The Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouts, and the project had to be original and sustainable, demonstrate leadership and help the community. In addition, the girls had to spent at least 50 hours on the project.
