WESTFIELD, NJ - More than 1,000 runners of all ages arrived in Tamaques Park on the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving for the 30th annual Five-Mile Turkey Trot and Practice Hard Mile, according to organizers Sports A/R.

The event begin with the one-mile run:

Phil Coyne came from Jacobstown, NJ, to run in his first Westfield Turkey Trot.

“I thought it would be a nice challenge on a cold day,” said Coyne as he prepared for the five-mile race. “I run in several of these runs up here in Westfield. I like it here.”

Amy Hains of West Orange came to run with three of her friends.

“We’re looking to do a half-marathon next year and thought this was a good way to get started training,” said Hains.

“It’s a big crowd. It’s a bit cold. But we’re excited,” added her friend Courtney Sollie, also of West Orange.

There was plenty for runners and spectators to enjoy on this chilly-but-sunny day, from hot soup and bagels to face painting to live music and a shot at the ‘Wheel of Chance.’ There was B-Tag scoring for both distances, overall and age group awards for both runs, random giveaways and “a generally awesome day out,” said Tears Smith, event director for Sports A/R.

Check the Turkey Trot’s website, www.westfieldturkeytrot.com, later for a complete list of scores.
