Thief Targets Coin Boxes at Apartment Buildings' Laundries

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Thieves are targeting coin-operated washing machines in apartment complexes, prying open the coin boxes and stealing the change.

On Tuesday, the manager of the apartment complex at 154 Irvingon Ave. reported that between 9 a.m. on Christmas Day and 11 a.m. on Monday, someone had damaged the coin boxes of two machines and taken an unknown amount of change.

During the same time frame, someone entered the locked laundry room at 174 South Orange Ave. and pried open the coin box on a washing machine, the apartment manager told police.

In other crime news:

  • A 48-year-old Orange resident, Rodney Cauthen, was arrested on Christmas Eve by West Orange police after they discovered he had two GPS units and an iPod that had been stolen from a vehicle on Stonehill Road and Harding Drive. He was charged with receiving stolen property.
  • Three Irvington residents were charged with criminal trespass after a Kenneth Terrace resident called police on Monday to report seeing them in his yard. Shaquan Jones, 18, and Rashon Spruill, 20, were arrested without incident. A 16-year-old juvenile fled and was chased for several blocks by South Orange and Maplewood officers before being caught in the Edgewood Terrace area of Maplewood. That suspect was also charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.
  • A 2002 Audi was stolen from the owner’s driveway at Glenview Road sometime after 12:15 a.m. on Monday. Thieves also broke into vehicles parked on West End Road and Fielding Court. In the first incident, which occurred Dec. 22, a bag containing keys was removed from the vehicle’s glove compartment. In the second, which occurred overnight on Dec. 24, an insurance card was stolen.
