The 2013 Annual Suburban Chamber of Commerce "Tying the Community Together" Awards recipients were recently announced by Chamber Chairman John Rosellini of Overlook Medical Center.

The awards recognize individuals and organizations from Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights for their outstanding efforts to the community.

The 2013 Business of the Year Award winner is The Alternative Press (TAP) and its publisher Mike Shapiro. In naming The Alternative Press as 2013 Business of the Year, The Suburban Chamber noted that "This hyper-local media site has been in operation in the region for nearly five years and is showing true journalistic integrity and community spirit in the way it operates."

"This award is a tremendous honor and reflects the integrity, dedication and talent of our reporters and editors who every day work in their communities to make sure that TAP provides hyper-local, timely and objective news to our readers. I am proud to accept this award on behalf of our team," said Mike Shapiro.

Jim Lonergan, former President and COO of TheStreet.com and now, Chairman of TAP, echoed Mike's remarks. "TAP is a great organization because of its people", Lonergan said, "TAP began serving the communities of New Providence, Berkeley Heights and Summit and now almost five years later we serve 48 NJ communities and thousands of NJ residents every day.
